So how did who come out on top?

As I'm writing this, there is still no conclusion to the "everyday story of Westminster folk."

If it had been presented on a stage, the last few days would have borne more than a passing resemblance to one of Brian Rix's Whitehall farces.

People entering and leaving the stage in rapid succession. Appearing through one door, leaving by another, all the time trying their best not to bump into the wrong person at the wrong time; apparently carrying on one relationship, whilst another might (or might not) be running simultaneously in secret.

Not sure which people in the photo might represent David, Nick or Gordon….

Anyway, it seems like they're almost at the curtain call – or maybe not!

Even as I write, Gordon Brown has just resigned and exited stage right.

Now we just have to wait and see who enters through the French windows from the garden to stand centre stage.

Even then, we may have to wait a few more weeks or months to find who has really come out on top!
